TOP-10 most powerful and beautiful castles and fortresses of Ukraine!

Hundreds of castles, which are about 500-600 years, are located in Ukraine! It is even more correct to call them castles-fortresses, because where princes and kings erected fortifications, the residences of owners were obligatory constructed. We offer you a small tour of the most beautiful fortifications of the country. 


Satanovskiy castle

Only walls remained from this construction. But they look grand: their thickness - 1.5 meters! The castle was built by Polish gentry in the XV century. Two centuries later it became dilapidated due to frequent raids of the Tatars. But the castle was restored, and in the XX century it was transformed (or rather rebuilt) into a sugar factory. However, it lasted a short time, and now tourists can enjoy the quiet corner towers.

Nevitsky Castle or Angry Dev

On the left bank of the river Uzh in the green foliage the tower of Nevitsky castle may be seen. Feel free to head for the summit to touch the XIII century! The walls are - solid ruins. It is evident that it is partially restored, but it has little effect on the general look. Equally impressive is the view from here to the river and on the Carpathians. If desired, you can even look out the border with Slovakia. But back to the castle walls. There is a legend that solution with the addition of egg whites and milk was used for their construction. Local people were forced to take these products for the construction of the fortress. Cruel mistress of the castle was not enough with it: she required to take breast milk, and in the district babies began dying. The story ended with the evil maiden beheaded. They say her ghost still wanders among the ruins.

Svirzh castle

Another monument of defensive architecture of the age of six century. At the time, the castle belonged to nobles Svirzhsky. Then it was rebuilt a little, making a comfortable residence, but the original appearance was not lost. In the XVII century the construction of the procedure patted due to the Turkish sieges. First and then the Second World War too badly affected the state of the castle. It is now in poor condition, and going to be restored. But it is worth looking at this beauty even from outside!

Ostrog castle

It stands on a hill and at the bottom there is the river Vilija. It was the residence of the princes of Ostrog in the XIV-XVII centuries. The oldest building - The Watchtower. A museum was even made there. Round Tower and Cathedral of the Epiphany on the territory of the castle are noteworthy. Church is 563 years old, and it still works!

Belgorod-Dniester, or Akkerman fortress

It is considered well-preserved. Take note: the fortress was built in XIII-XV centuries. Fortification is standing on a rock and the Dniester is splashing at the foot. The total length of the fortress walls - about 2 km, their height ranges from 5 to 15 meters. Inside often festivals, opened the exhibition are held. But you can enjoy the outside and walking along the Dniester.

Khotyn fortress

It was built by King Daniel Galitsky in the XIII century. The fortress consists of four defense towers, the castle and the officers' barracks. In 1621, under its walls Ukrainian-Polish troops fought against the Turks. In the history this battle is known as Hotinskaya. Of course, the castle is not without restorations. And during its existence Khotyn fortress was repeatedly used for making films, for example even such as "Zahar Berkut", "Taras Bulba", "Arrows of Robin Hood".

Berezhany castle

Defense Castle was built by the Synyavsky generation in 1534. It took almost 20 years to build a colossus with high walls, reinforced with shaft. It was built, among other things, on the swamp. Construction soundly justified efforts many times: at different times the fortress was not taken by the Tatars, Turks, Swedes. The war of the XX century was only devastating for it. Since 2002 Berezhany Castle is considered to be historical and cultural reserve. Its restoration is still going on.

Medzhybizh Fortress

XIV century. Outpost Lithuanian princes. Fortress finishing work was made several times: first it was fortified with towers at the corners, and later a palace and a chapel were added. Nowadays, the castle was restored. On its territory museums, exhibitions are working. Within the walls of the fortress knightly tournaments are arranged. Travelers who have visited Medzhibozh, admired its power structure.

Fortress Zvyagel

The walls and tower are towering on the riverside of Sluch. In the XVI century, they were a part of the fortification Zvyagel and belonged to Prince Ostrog. However, the current beauty is not original: the castle was destroyed back in 1648, almost nothing left from it. Much later, in the Soviet time, it was decided to make a reconstruction of the fortress. So, new walls and a lookout tower emerged that time. The view of the river is incredible!
